ADDING NEW CHARACTER FILES CAUSES "UNEXPLAINED ERROR"

Adding any new characters from hero editor into D2R using the recommended method (create character, add items/levels etc.) then copy save file into Saved Games directory causes D2R to crash with an "unexplained error has occurred" message immediately after "pressing any key to continue" battle.net login.

If I remove the save file then the game starts up fine.

I just want to remake my old characters who were deleted after a game crash, but editor does not seem to be working.

Game in Americas region, fully updated and files were scanned successfully to make sure there is no corruption.
